The award, Best Unions Campaign of 2001, was given for the way that the local Communication Workers Union fought to keep the BT call centre open in Barrow.
The “Don’t hang up on Barrow” campaign managed to save 57 jobs when BT reversed their decision to close the call centre at the beginning of the year.
Demonstrations were held and the whole community backed the workers. The head of the CWU in the area said he was delighted with the commitment of all involved and the end result. << Archive
