Delhi police mulls action against call centres

At present, this 'severe action', is a written letter reprimanding the call centre that has hired the errant cab. "On Tuesday, a meeting between state telecommunications minister Sachin Pilot, Delhi Police officers and representatives from most call centres in the NCR was convened where strict guidelines were formulated," said a police officer.

After a painstaking week of hunting for the accused, the Delhi Police came up with two things: written regulations and intangible threats to call centres.

"We are yet to formulate a concrete policy regarding penalties for the drivers and call centre cab operators shirking their responsibility. The best we can do is issue a letter reprimanding them," the officer said. A sizable chunk of the 3,000-odd call centre cabs ply between 1 am and 5 am when Delhi Police's presence on the city's streets is thinnest.

Police said the call centre cabs normally shirk their responsibility to make a little extra money by "operating as hired taxis for short distances. This is visible at areas such as Dhaula Kuan."

Delhi Police commissioner BK Gupta said they were mulling a notification for irresponsible call centre cab drivers under section 28 of the Delhi Police Act and Section 144 of the CrPC, soon.
