Tuesday saw the doors of Telstra's Grafton call centre close for good. The closure was first announced ten weeks ago, giving the local community, and the 108 employees who worked at the centre, time to digest the news.
But last week, the telecommunications company announced that 18 new jobs in business support would be created and housed in the Telstra exchange building around the corner from the Fitzroy Street call centre.
These roles are guaranteed to run until June next year and while, for some the news was very welcome, others say the announcement just made the closure harder.
The impact of the call centre closure on the community of Grafton is already very apparent, most of all through the stories of the individuals who, up until Tuesday, went to work there every day.
These men and women now have to deal, not only with the loss of their income, but also with the decision of what they will do now, in a town that few of them want to leave but where jobs are not easy to come by.<< Archive
