Jobs at Darlington call centre under threat

Last week it was thought the thousands of North-east staff of mobile phone giant Everything Everywhere had escaped the company’s long feared job cuts. Workers had been worried for their jobs since the company was formed in January by the merger of Orange and T-Mobile.
The business employs 2,700 in Darlington, 2,300 people in North Tyneside and 900 in Doxford International Business Park in Sunderland. However, a spokeswoman has confirmed that some back office jobs in the Darlington centre, such as managerial and administrative functions, could be affected.
She added: “Orange and T-Mobile came together as one business on July 1. We are now in the process of creating a new proposed structure within our new united business that is set-up to succeed for the future.
“Wherever possible we've tried to keep disruption to a minimum however this means making some changes to ensure we are efficiently and effectively organised. Whilst these proposals do not impact frontline customer service roles, the proposal may impact some back office roles based in Darlington.”
The reshuffle came about after a three-month review to decide how the new company could save £3.5bn by reducing overlap between the firms. It then revealed plans to cut 1,200 jobs – 7.5% of its 16,000-strong UK workforce.
The spokeswoman added: “We have started a thorough consultation process with our employees and we will not know how many roles will be impacted in Darlington until this process is complete.
“Full support will be provided to any employees who are impacted by the changes and we are looking at the potential of redeploying employees.”
