Recession in Ireland hits Vodafone call centre

Declining customer numbers and lower consumer spending mean that Vodafone are talking of moving two call centre operations from Ireland to Egypt and India and to outsource its debt collection operation.

Some of Vodafone’s mobile services will move to Egypt where the company already has workers, or to an office in India.

Union officials say that it seems the company are happy to enjoy the benefits of having a business in Ireland such as Irish pro-business support and Irish tax rates but not to keep jobs in Ireland.
