Forty night shift jobs at Orange’s customer service centre in Darlington, Co Durham, are being outsourced to its partner IBM, based 7,000 miles away in the Filipino capital Manila.
Details of a “transfer package” to the most densely populated city in the world have been given to staff.
One employee, who did not want to be named, said: “It’s a complete joke. No one in their right mind would want to move to Manila.
“When we asked for details of the transfer package we were handed a sheet of paper with what the IBM employees receive, which is less than £200 a month, with a rice allowance and a laundry allowance.
"That’s not a transfer package – it’s a job description for someone who works for IBM in Manila. People are really upset.”
Darlington MP Jenny Chapman said: “I am lost for words. It is hard to take this seriously, or consider it as a credible proposition. I would be fascinated to see how many take them up on this.”
Orange, which cut 120 jobs in Darlington last year, yesterday blamed the unrealistic offer on a “human resources error”. It was not expecting people to move to Manila.
The firm added: “The information given out was not done officially and we apologise to those involved.”
A “small number” of staff have so far accepted redundancy. Others switched to day roles, losing their £8,000-a-year night shift allowance. << Archive
