Some Dearne Valley workers only found out about the planned closure from a posting on Facebook on Tuesday.
But an Ikea spokeswoman said every employee at Manvers would be individually consulted by Wednesday, October 6.
She said: “Internal announcements were made on Tuesday but it is our aim to consult people on a one-to-one basis.
“We understand conversations may have taken place on internet forums before this was possible, but that is understandable in this day and age.
“This is a formative stage proposal and we will try to find alternative careers within Ikea for all those who are affected”.
Changing customer expectations and an increasingly competitive market are blamed by the company for the shift of work to Peterborough.
“These changes will allow us to serve our customers in a better, faster and more consistent way”, added the spokeswoman
“Ikea very much regrets any potential loss of a significant number of valued competent co-workers. We will aim to minimise the impact of the proposed changes as much as possible”.
A formal 90 day consultation period follows the shock announcement.
Ikea opened in the Dearne Valley in 2001 and created 150 new positions.
From March 23 next year all customer contact for both the UK and Ireland will be served from Peterborough.
